Cover dyeing has a significant impact on the quality grade of leather and serves as an indicator of material excellence. There are several instrumental methods for assessing quality, but one of the most widely used is the physico-mechanical method. This method determines the coating’s resistance to wet friction (a key factor in defining leather’s intended use) and evaluates its durability and reliability.

The method involves placing a leather sample of a specified diameter on a machine with a damp wool fabric, where it undergoes friction for a set number of cycles. Testing stops at the first sign of coating damage (for footwear samples, damage typically occurs after 60 cycles). For leather goods, testing is performed under higher friction conditions (over 100 cycles).
